What should my puppy eat?

Although primarily carnivores, puppies will occasionally eat plant-based meals. At about 8 to 12 weeks old, puppies spontaneously wean themselves off of their mothers’ milk. Wild dogs use the carcasses of their prey to feed their pups. Young dogs in the wild begin to eat independently when they are old enough (about 7-8 weeks old), while also consuming less milk from their mother.

Guide on basic puppy nutrition
The following advice is broad; however, because each dog is unique, you should consult a veterinarian, especially if your puppy has any unusual dietary requirements or reacts to a typical diet.

Your dog’s diet should be built around a high-quality, balanced, premium puppy food that is suitable for their age and health level. You may determine whether anything complies with Australian Standard for the Manufacturing and Marketing of Pet Food AS 5812:2017 [1] by examining the label.

In the beginning, puppies should be fed at least four times daily; as they get older, the number of meals should be gradually decreased (adult dogs should be fed at least twice per day to help avoid bloat, which can be fatal).

Teething

If you do decide to give your puppy bones, make sure they are always raw and introduce them gradually. The size of the bone must be sufficient to prevent the puppy from putting the entire bone in their mouth or swallowing it whole. Avoid using T-bones, large knuckle bones, large, hard marrow bones, large, sawn-lengthwise bones, or “chop” bones (such as lamb cutlets). Request non-bone chewy substitutes like cow hearts from the butcher. When your dog is eating a bone, always keep an eye on them.

Your puppy should never be left unattended while eating raw bones.

Other dishes
When serving cooked meat, such as boiling chicken or lamb, make sure there are no hazardous ingredients present, such as cooked bones or onion sauce (see below). As previously discussed, it is not advisable to consume raw meat or bones since they may contain bacteria that can harm both humans and animals. If you do choose to give your puppy any raw meat or raw bones, we advise that you only use human-grade options. Avoid raw meat products sold as pet food, including sausages, sausage meat, rolls, and bone goods, as well as prepared processed meats, as these products may also contain sulphite preservatives. On occasion, tinned salmon, tuna, and sardines in spring water may also be provided as a treat (take care with any fish bones). Fish shouldn’t be continuously fed.

The following substances should never be fed to dogs because they are poisonous (please notice that this is not a full list): Alcohol, onions, onion powder, garlic, coffee or caffeine products, mouldy or spoiled foods or compost, avocado, bread dough, yeast dough, grapes, raisins, sultanas (including in Christmas cakes etc.), currants, nuts (including macadamia nuts), fruit seeds, corncobs, green unripe tomatoes, mushrooms, cooked bones, small pieces of raw bone, fatty trimmings/fatty foods, salt, and roughly-chopped garlic are all prohibited.

Make sure your puppy isn’t able to access the string that surrounds rolled roasts or the absorbent pads that are placed beneath meat when it is wrapped on trays.
