Should I Bathe My Cat with Flea Shampoo?

If you have a flea infestation, you’re likely seeking for a quick solution because they may be quite bothersome and even frightening.
Perhaps you’ve heard of cat flea shampoos, but are they the best treatment for your cat with fleas?
Flea shampoos are excellent because they can lessen the number of fleas on your cat and provide some short-term comfort. However, they are unable to stop fresh fleas from landing on your cat after the bath, so to keep your cat healthy and scratch-free, always use a flea preventative that has been approved by your veterinarian in addition to any flea baths.
In order to figure out when and how to use flea wash on cats, we gathered some of the best cat flea shampoos and contacted Ohio-based veterinarian Dr. Michael Henricks, owner of Faithful Friends Veterinary Clinic.
The best cat flea shampoos are designed specifically for cats and kittens over 12 weeks old and kill fleas on contact.
Why should cats use flea shampoo?
Flea shampoos will help eliminate some fleas from your cat’s coat once she has already become infested, which may be especially helpful if your cat is dealing with a lot of fleas. However, they are ineffective for preventing flea infections.
But it’s crucial to start your cat on medicine right away after giving her a bath with a flea shampoo to stop fleas from coming back.
Dr. Henricks told The Dodo that shampoos are often ineffective at preventing parasites because cats don’t like to be bathed and the shampoo only works while it is on the animal. “Pets will be at danger of having fresh fleas and ticks that exist in the environment jump on them once the shampoo is rinsed off, since a flea or tick spends just a brief amount of its life cycle actually residing on the cat.”
Dr. Henricks continued, “[Flea shampoos] do work well to ‘depopulate’ a patient who has a serious infestation. Dr. Henricks frequently suggests Capstar over a wash for cats that are battling an infestation, though.
Dr. Henricks described Capstar as an outstanding oral parasite control treatment that begins to act in 30 minutes and eliminates all fleas on the cat in 24 hours. Since it only lasts for 24 hours, a longer-acting topical medicine like Bravecto or Revolution Plus is used alongside Capstar to provide long-lasting protection. It is most frequently used in cases of severe flea infestation to get the problem under control rapidly.
For $37 on Amazon, try the Capstar oral medication for cats.
However, if you’re in a bind and dealing with a cat that’s infested with fleas and needs relief right away, flea shampoo can be a wonderful temporary solution.
What to think about while buying cat flea shampoos
There are a few things to consider when shopping for a flea shampoo to make sure you get an effective item and that your cat is safe while using it.
Fleas are killed upon touch.
Your cat needs treatment right away if she has a flea infestation. Finding a shampoo that kills fleas on contact is therefore essential. You and your cat will be able to start fresh with a more complete flea treatment regimen thanks to this.
It eliminates parasites like fleas.
The majority of cat flea shampoos contain pyrethrin, which kills not only adult fleas and ticks but also their eggs and larvae. Your cat will be fully rid of all pests after just one wash, and any eggs or larvae that have not yet emerged will also be flushed down the toilet. As a result, your cat will be prepared to begin a more thorough pest prevention and treatment plan.
It is especially made for cats.
You should always check that any flea product you give your cat is made particularly for cats and not canines and avoid certain components.
Because it takes dogs’ livers considerably longer to break down the medication than it does for cats, Dr. Henricks explained that cat-specific products would have lower quantities of pyrethrin and won’t contain permethrin.
Because of this, putting a dog flea shampoo on a cat or vice versa can be extremely dangerous (unless the product is labelled for both dogs and cats). As a result, make sure you’re using a product that is suitable for your pet’s size, age, and species.
Some shampoo formulations, such as a few all-natural shampoos made of plants, are safe for both cats and dogs. Avoid this shampoo at all costs if “cat” is not clearly specified on the bottle.
Make sure a product, whether it be a shampoo, oral medication, collar, or topical, is labelled for cats, and consult your veterinarian if you have any doubts about its safety.
Natural versus pharmaceutical
The majority of cat flea shampoos contain pyrethrin, a compound made up of six different chemicals that aggressively kills fleas, ticks, and other pests. Pyrethrin cannot be found in an all-natural flea shampoo. Although chrysanthemum plants naturally contain pyrethrin, “all-natural” shampoos will instead contain concentrated concentrations of essential oils instead.
Although peppermint oil can be hazardous to pets, other essential oils such as clove, eucalyptus, and peppermint have been found to be beneficial at repelling pests.
But keep in mind that formulations without pyrethrin might not be as effective.
Shampooing versus waterless foam
Try a waterless flea shampoo if your cat despises bathing so she will actually allow you to apply it to her. Her coat may be combed through foam shampoos without needing to be rinsed afterward.
The formula that is gentle on sensitive skin
You should look for a shampoo that is specifically marketed for sensitive skin if your cat has dry, itchy skin. Numerous factors, such as dietary inadequacies, seasonal or environmental allergies, hormone imbalances, and more, can contribute to cat skin problems. Because they contain pesticides, all flea shampoos will be a little harsh on the skin, but you can opt for shampoos that replenish nutrients to delicate skin with ingredients like oatmeal and aloe.
Top-rated cat flea shampoos
Here are a few of the best shampoos you can buy online. But keep in mind that to prevent fleas from returning, each flea shampoo must be used in conjunction with a flea preventative.

Buying a Whisker City Water Fountain

If you are looking to buy a new water fountain for your house, you will find a wide variety of choices. Some of them are catit, pineapple, and Zeus H2EAU drinking fountains.
Replacement filters prolong the life of your pet’s water fountain
If you have a water fountain for your pets, you should consider getting a replacement filter. Some come in packs while others are sold separately. Buying a filter is not always an easy decision. You need to take into account the cost, the type of filter and how frequently you want to replace the device. Having a water fountain filter in your home can make you and your family feel safer. It also saves you from the hassle of constantly buying bottled water.
The best way to determine which of these options is right for you is to consider your pets and your pocketbook. A savvy pet owner will look for a replacement filter that offers the best value. Also, a water fountain with a top notch filter should be easy to maintain and clean. This is especially true if your cat or dog has a tendency to drink from the faucet. Having a top notch filter will ensure your pet is drinking the purest of water.
Pineapple Cat Water Fountain
If you are looking for a new cat water fountain for your cat, you have a lot of options. Some are pricier, others more durable, and still others are inexpensive. However, it’s important to find one that suits your needs and your budget. You will also want to consider a few features before you make your final decision.
The first feature you should look for in a cat water fountain is a strong construction. These are usually made from robust materials, such as stainless steel. They are less likely to collect bacteria and other contaminants. Also, they are easy to clean and break down.
Some water fountains have a filtration system that removes odors and other contaminants from the water. Most of these recommend changing the filter every two to four weeks. However, some models, such as the Petlibro Capsule Automatic Pet Water Fountain, have an energy management system that allows the filters to last longer.
The Petlibro Fountain is an automatic fountain that features noise-insulated tubing. The water is pumped into the drinking basin, then flows through a filter tray. This is an easy and convenient way to give your cat fresh water.
Catit Fountain
If your cat is picky about drinking, he may be happy to get his daily drink from a Catit fountain. It offers fresh, pure water in three different flow rates.
This water dispenser is a popular choice among cat guardians. It is easy to assemble and maintain. The filter is designed to clean out dirt, hair, and debris.
Water flowing through the reservoir also helps your cat to avoid urinary tract disease. Proper hydration promotes saliva production, which aids in digestion.
The water level indicator lights up when it is time to change the water. The pump also creates a gentle, soothing stream that encourages your cat to drink.
Some models feature a “dish” surface that allows your cat to play in the water. However, playing in the water can make messes.
Aside from the stainless steel top and the vertical filtration system, the Catit fountain uses plastic parts. While BPA-free plastics are less hygienic than stainless steel, you can wash the fountain’s plastic parts in your dishwasher.

Besides killing off microscopic offspring of adult heartworms, it also has the potential to cause shock-like symptoms in pets that are already infected.
It should come as no surprise that the best dewormer for cats and dogs is an oral one. The Bayer Drontal Broad Spectrum Dewormer is a good choice for treating the bugs. You’ll need to stick to its instructions, though, and give your pet it every so often.
There are several other products on the market. For instance, Revolution Plus Topical Solution is one of the more effective options for keeping your cat’s fur clear of pesky parasites. Among its many uses, it has proven useful for controlling flea infestations.

Another popular dewormer for cats is Hartz UltraGuard Rid Worm. It is available in liquid or a tablet form, and can be squirted directly into your cat’s mouth.

Centragard Topical Solution
Centragard Topical Solution for Cats is a product that treats roundworms and hookworms. It can help you prevent heartworm disease and other health problems caused by these parasites.

Revolution Plus combines two antiparasitics, Sarolaner and Selamectin, to treat intestinal roundworms and adult fleas. Unlike most topical treatments, this product kills these parasites within six hours. It also provides robust protection for an additional 24 hours.
Revolution Plus is available in three sizes, allowing you to choose the right one for your pet. The small size is suited for kittens between 2.8 and 5.5 pounds. For larger animals, use the larger size.
In addition to controlling fleas, this treatment protects against hookworms, ear mites, and intestinal parasites. It’s designed to be administered once a month, but you can use it year-round at scheduled intervals.
Mebex
Aside from being a pet store stalwart, my cat is the proud stewardess of our spartan household, he is also the undisputed king of our pampered hound. Thankfully, we have a veterinarian on speed dial for when the proverbial pound dog decides to bark. The vet has been kind, generous, and a good judge of character. As for the rest of us, well… let’s just say, we’re a close bunch. This is a family affair and if it weren’t for the aforementioned paw patrols, I’m not sure where we would be today! We’ve certainly got our fill of kibble courtesy of the aforementioned pooches, ahem. Lastly, our vet is no slouch when it comes to pet possessiveness! Keeping him in check is the best way to keep our feathers firmly clipped and our feline snobs from slacking.
